Amendment 16- This gives congress the power to collect taxes on income without apportioning it among the states.

Amendment 17- providing for the election of two U.S. senators from each state by popular vote and for a term of six years.

Amendment 18- this amendment banned the sales of alcohol.

Amendment 19- This amendment gave women the right to vote.


Elkins Act- The Act authorized the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) to impose heavy fines on railroads that offered rebates, and upon the shippers that accepted these rebates.

Federal Reserve Act- an Act of Congress that created and established the Federal Reserve System, the central banking system of the United States, and which created the authority to issue Federal Reserve Notes

Hepburn Act- A federal law that gave the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) the power to set maximum railroad rates and extend its jurisdiction. This led to the discontinuation of free passes to loyal shippers. In addition, the ICC could view the railroads' financial records, a task simplified by standardized bookkeeping systems.

Hull House- a settlement house in Chicago, Ill., founded in 1889 by Jane Addams. It allowed immigrants to have the opportunity for education and socializing.

Initiative- the power or opportunity to act or take charge before others do.

Keating Owens-Act- prohibiting the sale in interstate commerce of goods produced by factories that employed children under fourteen, mines that employed children younger than sixteen, and any facility where children under fourteen worked after 7:00 p.m. or before 6:00 a.m. or more than 8 hours daily.
