Jose Navarro was a very important Texas figure in history. He was the only Mexican-American to sign both the Texas Declaration of Independence as well as the United States Declaration of Independence. He was apart of legistlature as well as a vital part in the beginning of Texas statehood during the Texas Revolution.

Jose Antonio Navarro was born on February 27, 1795 in San Antonio de Bexar, Texas.

He was a successful farmer and even though he did not recieve a very high education, he became interested in politics during the Texas Revolution.

Jose Navarro would eventually go on to read law in San Antonio. He then got his license to practice law in Texas.


Before Texas Independence, Navarro was elected to both Coahuila, Mexican legistlature and Texas state legistlature. Navarro supported Texas statehood in 1835.
Jose Navarro wanted to improve the rights of local Tejanos that lived in south Texas. Many Anglo Texans disrespected Tejanos after the Texas Revolution.
Jose Navarro supported president, Mirabeau B. Lamar. With his support, Navarro was selected as commisioner to help in the Santa Fe expedition.

The Santa Fe mission failed. After multiple Indian attacks, Navarro was eventually held hostage and imprisoned for fourteen months! Navarro eventually escaped and returned back to Texas.


Jose Navarro favored annexation of Texas to the United States. He was also the only Hispanic delegate at the Convention of 1845.
