Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York, New York. Theodore was named after his dad, Theodore Roosevelt Sr. Since their names were the same it was confusing to him and his dad when people would say the name Theodore.

His family came up with a nickname for Theodore, Teddie.
As a child Teddie was always sick with asthma, it made him very skinny and weak.
Teddie had a dream of becoming the President of the United States. He thought his dream would never come true because he was a very weak boy, could not go to school, and he could not be around other children.

One day his dad walked into his room and encouraged Teddie to exercise so his body would become stronger. He also told Teddie that he would be homeschooled because he wanted his dream of becoming the President to come true.

Teddie's Father, Theodore Rosevelt Sr.

Teddie exercised and studied everyday and because he worked so hard he was able to attend Harvard University in Massachusetts. After he graduated he married the love of his life, Alice Hathaway Lee.
One day Teddie got the sad news that both his mom and wife had died. Teddie was so heartbroken that he gave up on his dream of becoming President of the United States. He decided to leave New York and live in a ranch.

Teddie was not happy with the decision that he made so he decided to come back home to New York. He saw his childhood friend, Edith Carrow, and fell in love so he married her.
Teddie still dreamed of becoming the President of the United States, he ran for mayor of New York but unfortunately he did not win. He did not give up, he kept working hard and thanks to a man named Benjamin Harrison he was given a job as a U.S Civil Service Commissioner. Then he became the President of the New York City Police Commissioners. After that a man named William McKinley gave him a job as the assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy.

Teddie left his job as the U.S. Navy assistant because he went to fight in the Spanish- American War. He was a colonel for the Rough-Riders and when he came back to New York he was considered a hero because of his bravery for going to fight for the American people.
Teddie was starting to think that he would never become the President of the United States. Then one day the Republican Party decided to ask Teddie to run for governor of New York. He had a big chance of winning because the American people considered him a hero.

Roosevelt ran for governor of New York and he won.
After a few years serving as governor the Republican Party decided to appoint Teddie as William McKinley's Vice President. They campaigned together and won. McKinley was the President of the United States and Roosevelt was his Vice President.
