"You may remember the old Persian saying, ‘There is danger for him who taketh the tiger cub, and danger also for whoso snatches a delusion from a woman.’ There is as much sense in Hafiz as in Horace, and as much knowledge of the world.”
The story revolves around the case of Miss Mary Sutherland. She lives with her mother and her stepfather. She is a good typist and has a good income, but she gives all her money to her parents.
The stepfather James is against a woman meeting a man, but Mary knows Homer Angel at Gasfitter's Ball and she falls in love.
It's an unusual courtship and Hosmer is a very weird guy. Hosmer shows himself only when James is in France. He goes out with the girl only at sunset. All his letters to Mary are very generic, revealing nothing about him.

SUMMARY
Miss Sutherland only knows that he works in an office in Leadenhall Street, but nothing more specific than that. All his letters to her are typewritten, even the signature, and he insists that she has to write back to him through the local Post Office. When Hosmer fixes the marriage date with Mary, she promises to wait for him and stays faithful, whatever happens.The wedding day, Hosmer disappears. Mrs Windibank, who is part of the plot, advises Mary to go home and wait for him to come back.

Holmes reaches a conclusion quite quickly and contacts James in his office by mail and asks him to meet at Baker Street.
James agrees, answering a typed letter.

From the study on Hosmer and James's letters, Holmes can understand that letters are all written with the same machine.
The stepfather James had disguised himself by Angel.
After solving the mystery, Holmes chooses not to tell his client the solution since he believes the woman doesn’t believe him. As to Mr Windibank, Holmes claims that his name will become famous in the annals of crime.

SHERLOCK HOLMES, He is a very cunning man, known for his ability to solve mysteries and the great knowledge of crime. Holmes has a good relationship with Dr. Watson, while he looks emotionally detached and disinterested by others.

DR. WATSON, Sherlock Holmes’s partner, he is the narrator of the story.
