I dedicate this book to all of the travelers who tried to travel west. But also my wonderful teacher Mrs. Willis.

This is Daniel Boone he was an explorer who traveled West.
Lewis and Clark- When Thomas Jefferson dispatched Lewis and Clark to find a water route across North America and explore the uncharted West, he expected they'd encounter woolly mammoths, erupting volcanoes, and a mountain of pure salt. On their long journey.
Daniel Boone- Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now Kentucky, which was then part of Virginia. In, 1775 Boone blazed his wilderness road through the Cumberland Gap and Appalachian Mountains.
Zebulon Pike- Pike left St. Louis, Mo., on Aug. 9, 1805, in a keelboat. He got 100 miles above the Falls of St. Anthony in Minnesota before winter closed in on his 20-man party. He took a few men onward, hauling supplies on sleds, and decided that Lake Leech was the source of the mighty Mississippi. Pike was to explore the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red rivers and to approximate the settlements of New Mexico.
Explorers of The West

This is Manifest Destiny the people moving west believed that she was like an angel that would bring new and better life.
Freedom- In the 1800s, a new belief developed called Manifest Destiny. It was a belief held by many Americans that the United States had a mission or duty to spread American culture and American values such as democracy and freedom through the West, all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Whether the people who chose to move west believed in Manifest Destiny or not, they were a part of it. No matter what trail they took, pioneers struggled for survival.
Why go West?
Homestead Act- The Homestead Act was signed into law on July 20, 1862, by our 16th president Abraham Lincoln. This act encouraged western migration by providing 160 free acres of land to each family. But it wasn't exactly free over the years the homesteaders would have to pay a small filing fee and live on the land for five straight years before receiving ownership of the land.
Gold Rush- The California gold rush of 1849 was one of the main factors that people decided to migrate west. The gold rush actually started on January 24, 1948 the first piece of gold was found by a man named James W. Marshall. The gold rush continued until sometime in 1855, the reason why it ended is all of these people came and got all of the gold so then the gold kept decreasing until it finally ran out in 1855 there must have been a lot of gold.

Above is an image of the Transcontinental Railroad or the (TRR) when it was first built or in it's best state.
Transcontinental Railroad (TRR)- The railroad stretched from the east coast to the west coast of the United States. People would no longer travel in wagons they would now travel in a safer, faster and cheaper way by taking the TRR. But also mail, supplies and goods could be shipped across the country on the TRR.
