Dedicated to my future scientists!

Hello everyone! My name is Kevin and I'm here to teach you all about volcanoes!

This is a dome volcano! Dome volcanoes range in height and diameter. They can form by piling on top of previous material or by filling up from the inside. This can take as little as a few days, or it can take almost 100 years to form.

This is a composite volcano! They are tall and steep because the lava is very thick so it does not flow very far. Composite volcanoes are the most common type of volcano of the three.

This is a shield volcano! Shield volcanoes are flatter than the other two. This is because the lava is a lot thinner, allowing it to flow much farther. The most common time for shield volcanoes to erupt is when water gets into the vent.

The earth's crust is made up of different plates. The Ring of Fire is located around the border of the Pacific plate. This area is made up of 452 volcanoes, producing majority of the world's volcanic activity.

Volcanoes can also form at hot spots. These are located in the middle of the plate. They occur due to magma rising and erupting through the earth's crust.

Volcanoes mainly occur at plate boundaries. One being a divergent boundary. When the two plates move away from each other, they are creating holes for the magma to flow out.
Another plate boundary is known as the convergent boundary. As the plates move towards each other, pressure, friction, and melting increase. This causes the magma to rise.

The material inside of a volcano is called magma. During an eruption, this material flows out of the volcano. Once the magma reaches the outside surface, it is known as lava.

Two types of rocks that form from magma are gabbro...
and granite. These rocks take longer to cool because they are under the surface. This causes them to have crystals that are larger.
