Once upon a time, there was a man named Abraham Lincoln. During the Civil War, he was the president of the United States and was a good president.

At the end of the war, the people needed a plan to fix the nation as they were mad at each other. Lincoln made a plan called the 10% Plan. This would help people's property except slaves, would forgive all of the South if 10% said sorry, and would get rid of slavery because slavery is bad.

Not everyone liked Lincoln's plan, so another plan was made. Mr. Wade and Mr. Davis created their own plan called the Wade-Davis Bill.

The Wade-Davis Bill was less nice to the South. Instead of 10%, 50% of the South had to say sorry, slavery would have to end and give ex-slaves rights. The goal was to not give power to the South slaveholders. Lincoln put the Bill in his pocket though and "forgot about it" so it didn't pass.

Then, Lincoln got shot in the head which made him very sad and he died. So, Andrew Johnson took his spot as president of the United States. He also had a plan for Reconstruction.

Johnson's plan was also very easy on the South, but had one very big problem. This plan would completely ignore the soon to be ex-slaves and was very mean to them. A lot of people called Radical Republicans did not like this plan either so they said they didn't want it.

Johnson and the Radical Republicans went back and forth on many proposed plans but eventually the Radical Republicans won and told Johnson to
shut up so the Civil Rights Act of 1866, the 14th and 15th Amendments, as a part of the Reconstruction Acts of 1867 were passed which were all about equality.

Tired of President Johnson, the Tenure of Office Act was created and used to impeach Mr. Johnson because he broke it by firing a Senate dude. So the people waved goodbye to Andrew Johnson who was very sad at being the first president to be impeached.

During this time, the recently freed slaves did not have a great start to their new lives. Black codes and sharecropping was used to basically put them right back into a new version of slavery, but the recently implemented Amendments and Acts made it a little bit better for them and put an end to a big part of it. Everything was still not perfect though as angry white people eventually led to the creation of the Ku Klux Klan which tried to hurt the freed African Americans. They have died down for the most part in todays world however, but it was not easy for African Americans during this time.
