*How periodic trends affect bonding
Chemical bonds
Chemical bonds hold together atoms in compounds. There are three kinds of chemical bonds: covalent, ionic and metallic bonds.

Ionic bonds
Ionic bonds for when one atom steals the electron from one another creating positive and negative ions binding the two atoms together, resulting in positive and negative ions which attract each other.

Covalent bonds
Covalent bonds form when two atoms share electron to fill their outer most valence shells. If they share electron in such a way as to create a noble gas configuration for each atom.

Metallic bonds
The chemical bond characteristic of metals, in which mobile valence electrons are shared among atoms in a usually stable crystalline structure.
