After the was war of 1812, the United States took a firm position against European influence in the Americas. President Monroe established a policy that would have a lasting impact on U.S. relations with Latin America.

The United States acquired Florida in 1819. Spanish territories in the Americas revolted and gained their independence. Britain granted Canadians more rights.
