
During the civil war inflation was a big problem. War affects all countries for many reason like government spending for weapons, rise in demand for goods, workers leaveing jobs so there were less supplies so prices rose quickly causing inflation.
Shortages of food and supplies forced the rate of inflation even higher. One newspaper estimated that it cost $6.55 in 1860 to feed a small family In 1863 it was estimated to cost $68.25 to feed the same family. Shortages also affected the printing of money in the South.

The Confederate States released their first issue of paper money in April 1861. The total amount of currency released was 1.7 billion. For a short time after the outbreak of the civil war confederate currency was accepted throughout the south as medium exchange. By the end of the conflict soap could sell for as much as $50 and a suit and tie could sell for as much as $2,700. In the beginning they planed on issuing half dollars and one- cent coins. At the end of the war Confederate currency became valueless. Confederate money is very rare and expensive nowadays especially if it is good condition.


After the war, the Red Cross focused on service to veterans with their various programs. World War II called upon the Red Cross to provide their services to the U.S. military, Allies, and civilian war veterans. After WWII, the Red Cross introduced the first nationwide civilian blood program. The Red Cross also extended their services into many different fields.

The purposes of the organization were to give relief and act as a way of communication for the members of the American armed forces and their families. The Red Cross provided national and international relief and mitigation. With the outbreak of war, the organization experienced serious growth.

Civil War Slang
Civil war slang was used widely during the 1800s. They used secondary words for everything from soldier insults to money. They used terms like:
- Hunkey Dorey- Great!
- Greenbacks- money
- Hornets- bullets
- Sawbones- surgeons
- Bluffing- cheating
- Jailbird- criminal/prisoner
- Been through the Mill- been through a lot
- Sunday Soldiers, Kid Glove Boys, Parlor Soldiers- insulting names for soldiers
- Whipped- beaten
and so many others.
Civil War Fashion
Fashion during the Civil War was very different from the way we dress today. For instance the women back
then the women wore 5 different layers of clothing rather than just the essential stuff that we wear today. The men clothing wasn't that different they mainly wore there uniforms and occasionally suspenders to keep there pants up some occasionally wore top hats and fancier clothing than others.



Deserters And The North Carolina Mountains
According to some sources North Carolina had the highest desertion rate,but North Carolina supplied more soldiers than Southern states. But the reason for desertion between the different groups and such was different for instance the mountaineers was to return home and stave off. Most highlanders eventually deserted and others were captured by the enemy. Both teams has desertion but the North had a bigger group. Desertion happens when a solider permanently leaves the military before the term expires. The penalty of desertion if caught could have been shot on site.



During the civil war the soldiers were not the only ones that suffered there were the farmers and families who depended on their land to make living and get through had to pay more on their taxes. Tax-In-Kind is referred to any taxes paid in Kind with good or such services rather than money. Tax-In-Kind was paid by the citizens during the war with things such as agriculture, or the tax on agriculture with this it affected farmers and there way.

North Carolina limited influence over the confederacy
The North Carolinians had conflicting ideas about leaving the union but eventually they seceded from the union on May 20th 1861. They had provided an important amount of, soldiers, supplies, and war materials. Eventually by the 1830's and 1840's North Carolina was a two party state.
