Long ago, the peacock was a homely and plain bird with gray feathers the colour of storm clouds. He longed to be noticed by the affections of his lady bird. But despite his advances, she paid him no notice. Peacock decided to ask the other birds how they got their colours.

First, he went to Blue Jay and said, "You are so handsome with your blue feathers the colour of the sky. How do I make my feathers blue so that my beloved will notice me?"
The blue jay responded, "My friend, you need to fly as high as heaven in the sky to gain your blue feathers."
The peacock tried. He flew as high as he could, but since peacock's don't fly, he did not reach the heavens.

So peacock went to his friend, Mallard Duck and said, "You are so handsome with your green feathers, the colour of leaves. How do I make my feathers green so that my beloved will notice me?"
The mallard duck responded, "My friend, you need to fly to the treetops to gain your green feathers."
The peacock tried. He flew as high as he could, but since peacock's don't fly, he did not reach the treetops.

Again defeated, peacock went to his friend canary, and said, "You are so handsome with your yellow feathers, the colour of the sun. How do I make my feathers yellow so that my beloved will notice me?"
The yellow canary responded, "My friend, you need to fly to the stars to gain your yellow feathers."
The peacock tried. He flew as high as he could, but since peacock's don't fly, he did not reach the stars
