A long, long time ago I was a young
kid like you and the best part of every
day was getting to go to school!

I learned to read, I learned to count and
sharing was so fun! I got to learn new
things about my classmates, every one.

Snack was always yummy and it was nice
to get a break. Then, back to work! There
were always projects for us to make.

I made a bunch of new friends and I liked
to play outside. To get home every day, it
was the big bus I would ride.

For some kids, school almost seemed like
it was just a chore, but school was my
favorite! There was nothing I liked more!

But then...
Little by little things changed – I
didn't know what was going on!

Sometimes I would get headaches.
Sometimes I would read things wrong.

If I sat far from the teacher, I couldn’t
see the board and if we had to write,
sometimes I wrote down the wrong
word.

What does that
say?

So one day I went home from school and I
talked to my mom. I said “School is getting
hard!” and told her what was going on.
Mom took me to the eye doctor. He had
bad news to tell. He said he was sorry, but
that my eyes weren’t working well.

My eyes were not as clear and sharp as
they once used to be. “You’re going to
need glasses!” the eye doctor said to me.
My mom helped me pick out a pair, big
and round and new. When I finally got
them they were thick and heavy, too. My
parents told me when I wore my glasses I
looked cool, but I did not want to wear
those glasses to my school!

Ha ha! That girl
looks funny!
Four eyes!

I thought kids would make fun of me -
would they laugh and call me names?
Would they point and stare and whisper?
Would school ever be the same?

My tummy got the butterflies and I
was really worried. When it was time
to go to school, I really didn’t hurry.
My mother sent a note with me to
give to Mrs. Jensen that told her
about my glasses and my worry of
acceptance.

Dear Mrs. Jensen,
Kelly got new glasses that she has to
wear to school and she is very worried
that they will not look so cool. Can you
please tell her she looks fine and
everything's OK? Will you tell her
classmates that her glasses help her
see each day?
Sincerely, Kelly's Mom

My teacher read the note and then
she told me not to fret. She said:
