Dedicated to Mrs. Wyland's 3rd grade class :)

Long long time ago, there was a group of people who settled in Southeastern Europe along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. We called their civilization, Ancient Greece.
As the population grew, people moved to different areas of the land. The mountains helped form natural barriers between the major city-states.
The Greeks set up colonies throughout the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.This included settlements in modern-day Italy, France, Spain, Turkey, and parts of North Africa. These colonies helped to spread the Greek culture throughout the region.
Greece has hot summers and mild winters.
Each city-state ruled itself. They had their own governments, laws and army. Citizens were loyal to their city state. The city-states didn’t get along and often fought each another
Men
Men worked as fisherman. Many joined the army to protect the city-state. Some built ships or became sailors. Other were traders who traded their goods in the market place. Others even became writers and actors. However, most men were farmers.
Women
Women would stay home taking care of the house and the children. They also spent time spinning thread and weaving cloth. They were not allowed to leave the house without a male of the family or a slave.
