Song Dynasty

The Song Dynasty (along with the late Tang Dynasty) were also the first to use paper money.

Paper money was created by wood blocks.

Helped increase trade.

The Chinese were the first to discover how to create gunpowder. The Song Dynasty were the first to really put it to use in weapons.

They Used saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal.

Increased iron and steep production

Built large structures

Built first air-tight compartments

Reached perfection in the arts, silk, and porcelain

Confucianism was important, especially in the middle class

In 1125, the Jin Dynasty rose. When the Song came, the Jin turned on them. In 1126, The Song capital was surrounded. The emperor gave his title to his son, which did not help. The Jin captured the emperor in 1127. The Northern half of the Song Dynasty collapsed, leaving only the South.

• The Song army was weak, but we built great forts to defend ourselves.
• Sadly, we needed civilian cooperation, and the forts were a challenge to maintain.
• In the occasion that the enemy entered the fort, the Song were quickly defeated.
