

The Civil Rights movement was mainly a struggle for African Americans to earn and gain equality along side everyone else. Racism began after the Civil War. Soon, people were tired of the hate and violence targeted at them. This movement lasted nearly 2 decades. 2 decades spent fighting for their rights.


Black Panther Party
The Black Panthers were founded in October of 1966 by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton. Their main goals were to protect black neighborhoods and maintain the peace.

This group was founded to challenge police brutality against the African American community. Dressed in black berets and black leather jackets, they organized armed citizen patrols.


Brown v. Board of Education
Brown v. Board of Education was a Supreme Court case in which the court declared the segregation in schools (black and white students) to be unconstitutional
The Supreme Court overturned the "separate but equal" approach to public schooling


Freedom Rides
A popular way to protest were freedom rides. This meant civil rights activists rode interstate buses into the segregated southern United to challenge the non-enforcement of the United States.
Black riders traveled to the American Southmand attempted to use whites-only restrooms, lunch counters and waiting rooms.
"I Have A Dream" Speech
On August 28, 1963, MLK delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He calls for an end to racism in the United States and called for civil/economic rights.
