This book is dedicated to Delaney and "Nick".

Chloe Jones woke up before the first light. It was Anzac Day, and she had to wake her family up so they could go to a dawn service.

Anzac Day is a holiday where Australians and New Zealanders honor their country's veterans. Anzac stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and Dawn Services are where people gather before sunrise to remember the Anzacs.

Chloe went to Oliver and Mia's room, to wake them up. They were both sleeping.

Everyone in the family put on their Anzac badges, which were badges everyone wore on Anzac day to honor the veterans. Chloe Jones’s husband, William, wore a rosemary branch on his lapel, as a sign of remembrance.

The family got into their Land Cruiser and drove away. When they got to the service, thousands of the citizens of Sydney were gathered around a giant stage.

They were singing a hymn, called “Lest We Forget”, and Chloe and her children joined in. After the hymn, there was a reading. Then, a piper played a few songs. Finally, as the sun rose, a bugle player played “The Last Post”, which is a sad song that is played toward the end of the Dawn Services. After this, everyone observed a minute of silence, which always was observed after the playing of “The Last Post”.
