This book is about a girl named Jean who has Cerebral Palsy. She goes to a normal school where she has normal friends. She had her lifestyle adapted to that of a normal person and she is very confident and never considered herself disabled. She had never seen other disabled people before. She goes to a camp called "Crip Camp" which the kids are not pitied or praised for their courage, but accepted for who they are.
The camp is only ten days long but has a huge effect on Jeans prior beliefs and helps her see the world in a new light. Being at this camp has made Jean begin to feel a bit less confident because for the first time Jean admits that she is in fact different from other kids in her high school. While adjusting to the new lifestyle she meets Sara who has muscle dystrophy. She welcomes Jean and nicknames her Spazzo. Sara has a different perception than Jean about life and her views especially about the in-sensitiveness of the society towards people with disabilities. Her stay at “Camp Courage” later changes her whole meaning and beliefs about life.

As far as the educational and social impact I almost feel as if the experience in the camp was harder on Jean than her being happy and confident prior to going. The story ends with Jean crying and sobbing. She now understands that although she might be close to her family physically they will never understand her. She now feels more separated from them than ever before.
A comment in the story that really stood out to me and caught my attention is how this girl with a pretty extreme disability never seen another disabled person and she was so used to having to be normal that she did not even consider herself disabled.
I personally liked this book a lot and would recommend it. I like how it is an honest and a provoking book that provides us with a sentimental insight into the life of disabled people and allows the characters to tell us how they cope up and see the world.
