George Ripley was an American journalist born on October 3, 1802 in the town of Greenfield, Massachusetts. George’s father was a merchant who sold and traded valuables, but his mother was unemployed and did not work, instead she stayed home and took care of George and his sisters.

Later on, George went to college at Harvard University and studied ethics, or the idea of right and wrong behavior. He graduated from the university at the top of his class in 1823 at the age of 21.

He went on to teach mathematics for a short time at Harvard and then he became a minister at a Unitarian church from 1826 to 1840. After resigning from the church, he founded the Utopian community of Brook Farm in 1841 and continued his work there until it’s downfall in 1847.

In 1927, George married his first wife, a woman by the name of Sophia Dana, who also helped him co-found Brook Farm. George and Sophia did not have any children before her death in 1861.

The Transcendental Movement was a major event in Ripley’s life.

He was successful in this movement through his writings as a journalist. Although, his idea of a Utopian community at Brook Farm was not.

George Ripley had a large impact on the people of America. He helped Americans learn more about themselves through his teachings.

During the reform in 1849, George got a job at the New-York Tribune newspaper company and began working for a man named Horace Greeley. Although George worked very hard on his writings for the newspaper, Horace was a greedy employer and gained more profit and recognition from the writings than George did.
