Dedicated to Mrs.Schenk, the best history teacher ever.

Once upon a time, there was a great big empire called Rome. After all the countries in Europe had met to discuss who gets what land, they decided to divide the empire of Rome into 3 big groups.

Even though the people in each of these groups was divided, they spoke the same language, had the same culture/ region, and shared common history together. This made people make secret clubs to want to unify

One popular writer, Giuseppe Mazzini, made a really popular secret club called Young Italy. Young Italy was filled with people who wanted to make the divided Italy into one big country again.

Young Italy got so big that nearly everyone in Italy was ready to unite. The citizens started to rebel against their different governments from Austria and France

After many unsuccessful rebellions, the citizens finally had a victory in overthrowing the government of Sardenia. Mazzini was even able to set up a government in Rome. One writer in Sardenia, Camillo di Cavour, wrote a newspaper that gave a lot of good ideas on how to unify Italy.

With Mazzini and Cavour having the "brains" and "heart" for unifying Italy, Giuseppe Garibaldi was the "sword". He learned a very important style of fighting called guerilla warfare. Guerilla warfare is where you attack your enemy by surprise.

Using his tactic of Guerilla Warfare, Garibaldi and his army of the "Red Shirts" worked with the Sardeninan troops and Cavour to conquer the southern part of the Italian peninsula

After getting a lot of Italin land, Garibaldi offered the Kingdom of Two Sicilies from the peninsula to King Emmanuel in Sardenia.
