Many years ago, the US and the Soviet Union were 

competing to be the most powerful country in the 

world and to have control over technology and 

space. 

They scared each other with weapons and bombs for 

a long time, but no one wanted to attack first. 

This is known as the Cold War

Each one of the countries wanted to go to space 

before the other one. 

So the Soviets put the first man in space in 

1961.

That same year, US President John F. Kennedy 

told the nation that they should put the first man 

on the moon before the end of the decade.

So, on July 16, 1969, USA sent

the spaceship "Apollo 11" to the moon.

This was the Apollo 11 crew: Commander Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, 

and "Buzz"Aldrin.

July 20

 "Houston, Tranquility base here, the Eagle has landed".

These were the first words said on the moon.

Hours after landing, Commander Neil Armstrong set foot on the 

moon, and then did "Buzz" Aldrin.

"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for 

mankind."

Armstrong said the 

famous words:

The astronauts turned on their video camera and 

showed everything that was happening on the moon 

to thousands of people on Earth who sat watching 

their televisions.
