Western Africa
A long time ago, in a desert far away, there were many empires in Western Africa. One very important agricultural kingdom was Ghana. They had tons of success in their farming and they started to create more food than they needed.
Opening Up to Trade
This surplus of food allowed them to trade their extra food for new goods, like cotton, nuts, and leather goods.
Gold and Salt
After a few years, gold and salt started to dominate the trade throughout the desert. Gold was very shiny and that made it very valuable. Salt on the other hand was amazing for preserving food, and that made it very valuable.
More Gold and Salt
Because these two materials were so valuable, people traded them for one another. Eventually, this was the main trade between the northern part of the desert, and the south.
Ghana
Ghana was made along some of the most important trade routes in Africa. This flow of gold in the kingdom got it nick named "The Land of Gold."
But like empires tend to do... Ghana fell.
