One day, little Chad was walking to school when he saw a girl that he had never seen before.

Chad decided to introduce himself and make a new friend!

"Hi," he said to the girl, "I'm Chad, what's your name?"

"I'm Cindy," she replied, smiling, "We just moved here, we're your new neighbors!"

After spending the whole day talking and becoming friends, Chad and Cindy decided to walk home together.

When Chad got home, he was so excited to tell his mom about his new friend!

But when he saw his mom, she was MAD.

"What were you doing talking to her?" she demanded.

"What do you mean Mama, Cindy's my friend."

"No. You are not to talk to that girl or anyone like her ever again."

Chad was confused. He didn't see anything different about Cindy, and didn't understand why Mama was so angry.

"What do you mean Mama, ain't she just a person, like you and me?"

"No, son. Her people are different, we're better than them. And they should be separate from us."

Little Chad still didn't get it, so he asked his mom why Cindy was different.

"Ain't you seen the color of her skin, Son? They're different from us, and they don't deserve the same things we do."

The next day in class, Chad decided to ask Cindy if she got treated differently because of her looks.

"Why of course," she replied, "There's lots of things we can't do like y'all can. Things like voting, owning property, and employing ourselves."

One day, Chad was walking by Cindy's house when he noticed a bunch of boxes full of her family's stuff.
