Lola was the most beautiful peacock in
the Congo Rainforest. With her long eye-
lashes and vibrant feathers, she was the
most popular bird in the land. Not only was
Lola beautiful, she was soft-spoken and sweet.
She wouldn’t harm even the smallest tree frog,
and treated everyone she met as a friend.

Lola’s mother, the Queen of the Congo, had
always taught her to be kind to others and treat
everyone with respect. Lola was next to rule the
throne, and would one day be Queen, just like her
kind mother.

Every Saturday morning, Lola would take a dip in
the river and spread her beautiful wings out for
the jungle to see. Many of the animals in the
kingdom would join her for a swim while they
laughed, sang, and basked in the brilliance of her
beauty and kindness.

One animal that didn’t ever join in on this Saturday
morning ritual was Rory. She was an African Bulbul
bird whose black feathers were not brilliant like
Lola’s.
Because Rory was bitter about the way she looked
and was always unhappy, she did not have any
friends. She was extremely jealous of Lola’s
splendor and popularity. She secretly spied on Lola
every Saturday morning, devising evil plans to spoil
Lola’s happiness.

One Friday evening, Rory came up with a purely
wicked plan. “If Lola looked like me, she surely
wouldn’t have any friends either.”
Rory began flying all over the Congo to gather all
of the blackberries that she could find- collecting
them in the nook of a tree that overlooked the
river. After picking as many blackberries as she
could before the sun went down, Rory began
crushing the blackberries with a rock to produce a
black juice.

Rory awoke early the next morning to finalize her
plan. She waited until Lola began swimming and had
a large crowd watching her. Just as Lola spread
her wings, Rory poured the blackberry juice right
over her.
Lola’s feathers were instantly stained a dark hue,
hiding the glittering vibrance of her wings. It took
a moment for Lola to realize what had happened,
but when she spied her reflection in the river, she
flew into a tree far away and began to cry.
