The Karankawas existence was first recorded in
1528 when two European boats sailed into the
shore of a small island west of Galveston
inhabited by the Karankawa. In the late 1850s
the Karankawa resided in the vicinity Rio
Grande City. The local residents didn't welcome
the tribe, and the remaining Karankawa were
attacked and killed off in 1858.

The Karankawa never stayed in only one place.
They would move from campsite to campsite and
never stayed for more than a few weeks. They
mostly lived in portable wigwams or "ba-ak",
like the ones below. Wigwams were mostly made
of bark, sticks, and sometimes even deerskin.
Women often decorated their wigwams to make
them colorful.

This tribe was located in the Gulf Coastal
region. Because of this, the Karankawa mostly
ate seafood. This included fish, shellfish, and
turtles. But, they also hunted for animals and
ate plants. Their weather was usually warm,
with hot summers and mild winters. At night,
they usually had spiritual ceremonies called
"mitotes". They included dancing, singing, and
also have competetions of physical strength.

Since the Karankawa lived in the Gulf Coastal
region, one of their main sources of food was
seafood. So, they had to do alot of fishing.
They used large fishing nets to capture
turtles, shellfish, and other seafood. The
Karankawa were also famous for their longbows,
which they used for hunting. They also used
many sharp and large arrowheads for hunting, as
seen below.
