I dedicate this book to my family and friends

New Year Eve is a big holiday in Guatemala. My family and friends cook food and wrap gifts while waiting for the new year. Women cook delicious dishes of roast pork, tamales, and fruit cocktails. At midnight we set off fireworks, hug friends, and relatives, and wish each other a Happy New Year.
How do you celebrate New Year Eve?
We cook a delicious meal and share it with family and friends. We also exchange presents.

Our second celebration is Saint Valentine Day.
It is a lovely holiday in Guatemala. On February 14, we celebrate love and friendship. We show our appreciation by giving gits to our sweethearts and relatives. In school, students exchange gifts and break Pica eggs. We split the Pica eggs on our friends' heads. A Pica egg is an egg stuffed with colorful pieces of paper.
Yes, I am ready!
Are you ready to deliver your gift?

The Holy Week is the most important holiday in Guatemala. It is important because it reminds us of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for us. Many people participate in processions that stage the death and passion of Christ.
During the Holy Week, Christians do not eat chicken, pork, or beef.
However, we can eat fish and bread. Our mothers bake many types of delicious bread that we enjoyed with coffee or fruit juice.

In May the big celebration is Mother's Day. It is one of my favorite holidays. Every year, on May 10, I buy a beautiful gift for my mom, teachers, or aunts.
Mother's Day is significant in schools. Students write poems and perform group dances to entertain their mothers.
Happy Mother's Day, mama!
Thank you, son!

Teacher's Day is celebrated in Guatemala on June 25. Students make drawings, write essays, or bring gifts to their teachers.
The Teacher's Day is celebrated on June 25 to honor the teacher María Chinchilla who was killed by Guatemalan troops during a peaceful protest again the government, in 1944.
The teachers were asking for democracy, freedom, and the resignation of the dictator Ubicos.
Teacher, I give you this gift because you are the best teacher ever!
Thank you for being a nice teacher.
Thank you so much!
