The battle diary of Abraham Scott, a white, Union soldier serving from the start to the end of the Civil War

I am very lucky to have survived the attack at Fort Sumter. It must be one of the most horrifying times of my life, but to see where this conflict between the North and the South, i must get used to it, because the conflict may end up into a war. I think this war may be a good idea. I know war is always bad but if it is for a reason. That reason is slavery. As an abolitionist, i am happy to be fighting the South, the same people that, using the Dred Scott case, made slavery legal in ALL states not just the South. This war can go by quickly, or last years.

April 13 1861
Battle of Fort Sumter
April 20 1861
This is my first day at the encampment, the conditions are horrible. There is a constant risk of food shortages, the living quarters are dirty as a pig pen, and, if there is food, the food is very bad. Since the seceded states formed the Confederacy, the president hasn't outlawed slavery yet. What's taking them so long to do this? Do they know slavery is such and immoral and unholy practice!? Sorry, when a little bit off topic there. What i mean to say was that the living conditions here are terrible.

July 21, 1861
Today, was a major loss for the Union. We were just waiting for the Confederate forces to attack. Then the bloodshed happened. We were just doing fine overwhelming the Condeferates, but suddenly, we just broke. People started to run in all directions. One by one the Confederates almost took us down. We made a bloody retreat, the people watching the battle running behind and in front of us. Maybe this is a sign. God is telling us that this war is going to maybe be the bloodiest of all American wars.

First Battle of Bull Run
September 17, 1862
Finally, a Union victory with me being one of the soldiers participating! We were at Antietam, being pursued by Lee's army. We then stood at our defensive positions and held back Lee's forces. After several attack and counter-attack skirmishes, The Confederates fell back. Though the Union had more losses than the Confederates, they fell back first, thus making the Union victorious! This is one of the major Union victories. This may be a turning point!

Battle of Antietam
August 30, 1862
Looks like the last battle was not a turning point. This time the battle was a Confederate victory. We were at the exact same place as the First Battle of Bull Run, when Lee's forces surrounded us. We were being flanked on both sides. We managed to make a retreat, but it wasn't so safe. The Confederates had us running like dogs with their tails between their legs.
Second Battle of Bull Run

July 3, 1863 Battle of Gettysburg
This may be one of the biggest battles ever fought on this country! We caught the Confederates off guard at this little, quiet town called Gettysburg. Shots we exchanged as we saw each other. Charge after charge, the Confederates came and tried to attack, but we could hold them off. After

July 21, 1864 Battle of Atlanta
Another big battle to the list! Our main goal here was to cut of the supplies that were being sent to our enemies. Our target city, Atlanta. As we marched to Atlanta, we were attacked by several small skirmishers. They did not deal a lot of damage to our forces, so we kept marching. once we got there, the real fighting began. The general directed the Union forces to attack from all sides. After the Confederte general surrendered, we burned the city to the ground.

April 9, 1865 Surrender at Appomattox
The war is almost over! At this moment, the Union and Confederate general are discussing peace negotiations to end the long and bloody war. I the many battles went by, I have seen the definition of war. I may be resigning after the war, but the memories of the battlefield will never leave.
