We decided to dedicate this book to Doc. He has helped us so much this year and taught us many new things. We have learned a lot about our project and hope we can further our knowledge within STEAM. So, thank you Doc for all that you have done for us this year!

There once was a race car named Speedy. He has always dreamed of winning a race. One day on his way home he saw a flier that read, "Sign up for the 1st Annual Alternative Race Car Competition." Speedy was so excited that he signed up and raced home to tell his parents.

Speedy arrives at home to ask his parents if he can participate in the race. When he asked his mother she exclaimed, "No way! You may end up hurt!" Then Speedy begged and pleaded until his father said, "Go on and try hard!" Speedy got so ecstatic; he went to the garage and started preparing.

In this competition, Speedy has to create an alternative source for his car to run without harming the environment. Speedy decided to use a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane fuel cell. In this fuel cell hydrogen fuel is produced at the anode where electrons are separated from protons on the surface of a platinum based catalyst.

The weeks flew by and Speedy spent everyday working in the garage. He had one week left until the big race, so he had to complete his PEMFC cell as quickly as he could.

Speedy tried over and over again to get his fuel cell to work, but he kept failing. He couldn't figure out how to attach the anode, cathode, and electrolyte, without releasing all the hydrogen ions.

The next day, Speedy ran out of parts and had to go to the Auto Repair Shop. He needed to gather more materials to prepare for the big race! When he arrived, he met the seven other contestants competing in the race. But one contestant really stood out. His name was The Destroyer. He looked at Speedy, laughed, and teased, "There's no way you'll ever beat me!"

RACE DAY!! Today is the day of the big race and Speedy still hasn't perfected his PEMFC cell, but he is determined to win.

The announcer says, "Everybody start your engine!" Vroom! Vroom! "On your mark, get set, GO!" Speedy took off and started out in last place.
