I would like to dedicate this book to all of the band faculty at WTAMU, who through their persistence and logic, have convinced me that the Eastman Counting System is an integral tool to teaching band.

Hello! I'm Eastman Eighth Notes, and we are going to learn how to count using the Eastman Counting System!

It is simple, because all you have to remember are 5 rules:
- Downbeats are numbers
- upbeats are called Te
- Everything in between is Ta
And in regards to triplets
4.The second part is La
5.The third part is Li
See! That's not so bad! Now let's practice.

Because these quarter notes are all on the downbeats, we would just say: 1, 2, 3, 4.
By the way, the arrows also show your foot-tap.
1 2 3 4

Now we add the syllable "Te" to all of the upbeats.
Don't forget your foot-tap!
1 Te 2 Te 3 Te 4 Te

Now, since we know all our upbeats and downbeats, all we have to do is label everything else "Ta".
1 2 Te 3 Ta Te Ta 4

Finally we have triplets! As you can see, the downbeat gets the number, while the 2nd and 3rd parts get "La" and "Li"
1 La Li 2 La Li
Also, the foot tap is a little different. Now you use down press up. You can also think "flat, toe, heel".

And remember, that other rules apply to triplets as well, so if you see anything other than a downbeat, La, or Li, just call it Ta!

1 Ta La Ta Li Ta 2 Ta La Ta Li Ta 3 Ta La Ta Li Ta 4 Ta La Ta Li Ta

So, you would count these types of triplets like this!
