Dedicated to the Scottsboro Boys:
Charles, Clarence, Andy, Ozie, Olen, Eugene, Willie, Roy & Haywood
There once were two best friends, Ruby and Victoria. They wanted to visit Scottsboro in Alabama together.
Ruby and Victoria often rode the train together, but one day, the girls said they were hurt by nine boys.
That's when the police came to take the boys away to jail. The boys didn't look like the policemen. They were African American.
The boys went to court, but all people on the jury thought the boys had hurt the girls. The jury didn't look like these boys either.
While the boys waited in jail, support for them grew outside of jail. People wanted to see them free. ("Scottsboro Boys")
When the boys were given another chance to prove that they didn't hurt the girls, a nice lawyer from New York came to help them. (History.com)
His name was Samuel Leibowitz. He also didn't look like the boys, but he was very nice to them.
Mr. Leibowitz tried to help the boys, but the jury didn't look like them again. The jury thought all the boys had hurt the girls.
Can these boys please be judged by people that look like them?
Mr. Leibowitz was starting to see a pattern, so he asked for a more diverse jury. One that included African Americans.
(State v. Patterson)
The boys got one more chance to prove that they didn't hurt the girls.
This time, Mr. Leibowitz called Ruby to answer some of his questions. ("Scottsboro... Tragedy")
