Marty Muscle
and Friends

Marty Muscle has been looking to
improve some of his facial muscles
in order to impress the judges at his
body building competitions. One in
particular that he has been working
on is the Corrugator Supercilii Muscle.
It The muscle is primarily used to show
emotion like suffering or frowning. It
is also used to draw the eyebrows
inward to form a “roof” that prevents
high sun glare. It works by It moves
the skin that is superficial to the
frontal bone and contacts to
draw the eyebrow downward and inward. Its origin is at the
Medial superciliary arch and inserts at the Skin of
the medial forehead. It gets it's name from the word
corrugare which means to wrinkle; super which means a
a above; and cilium which means eyelash. This muscle is a
prime mover and is responsible for flexion.

Marty's friend Charlie is working on his Rectus
Abdominis muscle to impress the ladies and the
judges. He is trying to explain to his friends what he
needs to work on but they don't understand, so
instead he tells them that it is just a 6 pack. Rectus
stands for parallel to and that is there the muscles
line up in the middle of the abdomen. He goes on
explaining the importance because they are involved
in heavy breathing, but the main function is to flex
the vertebral column. The only question that the other
guys have for Charlie is what group of muscles does
this belong to?! And his response for that is the
Antagonistic group. Continuing to explain that the
origin is located at the pubis and the insertion can
be found at the end of the sternum and in the
cartilage of ribs 5-7. The other guys now
understand the rectus abdominis and may work on
improving theirs!

Marty's buff friend Eddie has always bragged about
his Trapezius Muscle. It is named for it's shape because
it resembles a trapeziod. The superior part of the muscle
connects to the occipital bone and then goes along the
vertebrae. The muscle connects laterally to the scapula.
Its origin is at multiple places: the external occipital
protuberance, the nuchal ligament, the medial superior
nuchal line, and the spinous processes of vertebrae. It
inserts at the posterior border of the lateral third of the
clavicle, the acromion process, and spine of
scapula. It is an antagonist muscle meaning it
opposes or reverses the action of the prime
mover but can also trade places with it.
The trapezius muscle adducts,
depresses, and elevates the
scapula. The muscle is used to
move the scapula and support
the arm.

When it comes to the Triceps Surae, look out for Bertha! She is
the sister of Marty and she has these muscles that will beat
out anyone else's. Not only is this one big muscle, but Bertha tells
everyone that the name triceps tells us that there are three points.
The Triceps Surae is made up of three different muscles and the
origins of these are the distal femur and the posterior tibia. "Now
if those are the origins please tell us the insertions," one of the
eager guys said. "Okay, well those are calcaneous, archilles
tendon." All of these muscles work together to act upon the ankle
by inducing plantar flexion and stabilizing the ankle. "These
muscles sure do a lot than I thought they would," said Eddie.
Bertha sure does do a good job of impressing the guys when it
comes to lifting weights. "Did you guys know that this muscle is
made up of the gastrocnemius and the tibilias anterior
antagonistic pairs?" "No we didn't!" "That is just one more thing
that Bertha know and we do not." "But we do know that they are
very common in everyday activity such as walking, running, and
jumping."

Curtis is a long time friend of Marty, and when it comes to lifting weights, this is one
thing he doesn't want to pass up. Curtis has always been interested in muscles so
he decided to learn a little about them first. He loved working on his arms, so he
worked on those the most. He first learned the
prefixes of the muscles and what they meant. Like Biceps
Brachii meant two points of attachments. He tried to share
his knowledge with some other guys in his weight classes
to help them understand what they were doing. He told
them that the origin for the long head was at the
supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and the short end was
at the hook-like structure on the lateral edge of the superior anterior portion of the
scapula. He then went on to explain the insertion being located at the
posterior border of bicipital tuberosity of radius and bicipital aponeurosis to deep
fascia and subcutaneous ulna. "These work together in the
synovial hinge joint in the elbow, by providing the action of
extension." "This is actually making sense!" These are both
Prime mover and Antagonistic muscles. "And let me guess,
they are used when you do something like flex your arm?!"
"YES!" "You are correct"
"Biceps Brachii Muscle." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, 13 Nov. 2012. Web. 13 Nov. 2012.

Curtis then talks about the Triceps Brachii and how they are
Antagonistic muscles with the Biceps Brachii. "Similar to the Biceps,
the triceps are made of three points of attachments instead of two."
The Long head origin is from infraglenoid tuberosity of the Scapula,
The Lateral head from posterior and lateral surface of the Humerus,
and the Medial head is from the lower posterior surface of the
Humerus. "Just like the Biceps Brachii and every other muscle, the
Triceps Brachii have a point of insertion also." Their points are the
upper posterior surface of the olecranon and the deep forearm
fascia. These muscles act on the elbow but they also act on the
scapula and the clavicle. "So both of these work together to act on
joints and provide movement on the muscles?" "Yep, that is
correct." They are an antagonistic pair and work together to do
their everyday uses.

Marty has always been impressed with
his friend Brad's ability to keep his hands
steady when lifting weights. Brad claims
it's because of his impeccable Abductor
pollicis brevis muscle. This muscle gets its
name because it works to abduct the thumb.
Also, brevis means it is the shortest in a
series of muscles in the hand. Its origin is at
the transverse carpal ligament, the scaphoid
and the trapezium. It inserts at the Radial
base of proximal phalange of thumb and the
thumb extensors. This muscle is responsible
for abduction and extension of the thumb. It
is, just like the trapezius, an antagonist
muscle. Its primary function is to help with the
opposition of the thumb which is a combination of
actions that allows the tip of
the thumb to touch the
tips of other fingers. This
muscle also works with
the the carpometacarpal
joint and the metacarp-
ophalangeal joint.

Marty's friends Mohammad has been working on his Abductor Hallucis Muscle so
he can perfect his walk when he walks up to flex for the judges.
This muscle is named after it's movement: abduction. Hallucis comes from the
word hallux, which is another word for the big toe. It's origin is at the tuberosity
(elevation on bone) of the calcaneus and it's insertion is at the medial aspect of
base of 1st phalange of the big toe.
The primary bone this muscle acts on is
the first phalange of the big toe. It is also
and antagonist bone and is responsible
for flexion. This muscle helps support
the arch in your foot
and allows you to
flex your big toe.
