One day, Eleanor Roosevelt was eating breakfast with President 

Roosevelt, discussing the problem of hungry and needy families 

during the Great Depression, when the mail arrived. 

Eager to see what news they had, Mrs. Roosevelt picked a letter 

from the stack of mail and began to read.

Dear Mrs. Roosevelt,

I know that you are very busy and have no time for 

a little girl, but I need your help. I am the oldest of 

six. My father died a year ago and my mother is 

working very hard selling eggs at the market, but 

there is still not enough. We don't have enough 

money for food or clothes for my little sisters. I 

would appreciate it if you could do something to help 

my family.

Mrs. Roosevelt looked up from the letter sadly. What could she 

do to help this little girl and families like Amelia's? Then she had 

an idea...

With help from President Roosevelt, Mrs. Roosevelt organized a 

food and clothes drive to help needy families of the community.
