This is one year of my life during the Great Depression.

My name is Alexys. I'm 13 years old. Me and my family live in a small house in the rural area. It was further out in the country.

My mom worked as a schoolteacher in the town nearby and my dad worked in the construction business helping build factories.

On October 29,1929, the Stock Market crashed. The entire country were losing everything quickly. My mom had lost her job because people were not able to afford for their children to go to school, so there was no children to teach. My dad barely held onto his job in construction. He had to continue building but received no pay.

Shortly after the stock market hit, everything began to go downhill. People were losing their jobs and homes all of a sudden and there was nothing they could do about it. My family had lived in a small house, enough for us to pay for, but when the crash hit we couldn't afford our home so we had to move into hoovervilles.

During the depression, I had to eat food from soup kitchens and whatever my mom and I could find from the store. I also had to continue to help my mom find food because I did not attend school anymore because we had no money. Before the depression, we had the supplies and necessities we needed, but now our values have changed because we have to survive based on what we can find and where we live.

When a new president was elected, it was Franklin Roosevelt. His election was greatly needed because he created a New Deal which came with lots of programs in order to help families all across America including mine.

The programs that were a benefit for my family were the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, United States Housing Authority, and the National Youth Administration. These programs helped my mom get a job because the FERA provided for aid for the unemployed. The USHA helped us to get a better home with a loan because it provided loans for low-cost public housing. And the NYA helped me to receive training on being a nurse since I did not have job because it provided job training for unemployed young people and part-time jobs for needy students.

Me and my family had struggled during the first few years of the depression, but when Roosevelt became president our life had gotten so much better. My mom was able to get a job and provide us food and money. And my dad was able to keep his construction job and get paid even more then he used to.
