Chapter 1: What is Immunity?

Immunity is the power to refuse any infection or toxin through white blood cells.

Chapter 2: What are the Two Types of Immunity?

First, there is Passive Immunity! This develops after someone receives antibodies from someone or somewhere else. (Like your mom feeding you milk!)

Next is Active Immunity! This happens when your own immune system produces antibodies to fight a disease! (Like the cold!)

Chapter 3: How does the Body protect itself against Foreign Bodies?

It's all through the Immune System! It recognizes and destroys substances that contain antigens!

In the Human Body...

Chapter 4: What is the role of antigens? Hormones? Tumor necrosis factor?

Antigens are toxins that bind to antibodies. They induce a response from the Immune System and cause the production of antibodies!

Hormones are chemical substances that affect the activity of another part of the body. They basically serve as messengers, controlling activities throughout the body.

Tumor necrosis factor is a cell signaling protein that has an important role in immune homeostasis, inflammation, and host defense.

Chapter 5: What happens in the Three Lines of Defense?

The 1st line of defense includes the physical and chemical barriers that are ready to defend the body from infection. These include the mucus, skin, tears, and cilia.

The 2nd line of defense is nonspecific resistance and destroys invaders in a generalized way without targeting specific individuals. (Example: Phagocytic cells)
