To Ivy and Oliver, may you have many fun adventures!

Hi Ollie!
What is our adventure today?

Hi Ivy!
Today we are going to explore and compare objects to learn about Matter.

Comparing objects means to look at how things are the same and how they are different but what is Matter Ollie?

Matter is all around us! It can be anything that takes up space and that has weight or volume.

Weight is how heavy or light something is. Look at this nest and this rock. The nest is light and the rock is heavy.

Heavy

Ollie! What is weight?

Ooh! I know what volume is. Volume is how much liquid an empty object can hold. The pail is empty but the amount of water it can hold is called the volume.

A solid is something that keeps it's size and shape. Here are examples of solids.

Brick
Log
Book
Trash Can
Wow Ivy, that's cool! Did you know that Matter could be made up of a solid, liquid or a gas? Awesome!

A liquid doesn't have a shape. It takes the shape of the container it is in. Here are some examples of liquids.

Milk
Water
Coffee
Juice
Soda

The helium that helps Ollies balloons float is a gas. The hot air that makes the air balloon fly is also gas. The oxygen we breathe is a gas. Gases take up space and have no shape. You cannot see most gases but you can see some like the gas fumes coming out of that volcano!
RUN!

Farts are gas!
Helium
Fumes
Hot Air
Oxygen

Oh no, Ollie! This bumpy gray rock has blocked the path! It's larger than Fluff Fluffs! I'm going to try and move it.....
I can't move it. It's too heavy!

Whoa! That is heavy! Hey Ivy, good observation. That rock is a solid. It is gray, bumpy and larger than Fluff Fluffs.

Let's get out of here before that rock rolls over on Fluff Fluffs!

Ollie, this is much more peaceful. Look at those two boats! Let's compare!

Yes Ivy, let's compare. The paddle boat is smaller than the ship. The ship is larger than the paddle boat.
The ship is also heavier than the paddle boat. The ship is made of lots of metal. It is a solid.

Oh, there you are Fluff Fluffs. Look Ollie, the paddle boat is lighter than the ship. It is made of wood. It is also a solid.

That puddle of water is a liquid.

Yes Ivy, the blood they store in the hospital is also a liquid.

Let's practice observing matter!

which is larger?
