


Today we are going on a field trip to an Art Museum. The museum has 5 exhibits on Great African Americans. We will learn about their contributions to history.












Ira Aldrige



Students this is the first exhibit on Ira Aldridge, he was an actor.He was born on July 24, 1807 to Reverend Daniel and Luranah Aldridge. At age 13, he went to African Free School in NY. From there he attended the University of Glasgow to study classical education. He later left NY for Britain and Ireland and later London to pursue a career as an actor because he felt he would be more well received as an African American actor in these countries.







Ira Aldrige
He became the 1st African American actor to establish himself professionally in a foreign country. He performed in London as well as many other places in Shakespearen plays, such as King Lear, Othello, MacBeth, and the Merchant of Venice. In London, he debuted as Othello with the stage name "The African Roscius."He observes the common theatrical practice of assuming a name similar to a celebrity in order to gain attention.

Some of his accomplishments include the following. An innovation he designed early in his career was directly addressing the audience on the closing night of his engagement at a given theater. He was the only actor of African American descent among the 33 actors of English stage honored with bronze plaques of the Shakespeare state. Including many honors/awards, such as: Prussian Gold Medal for Arts & Sciences from King Fredrick.










Marian Anderson
Students this is the second exhibit on Marian Anderson. She was a famous African American singer of classical music and spirituals. She was born on Feb 27,1897 to John Berkley Anderson and Annie Delilah Rucker. Her siblings were Alice and Ethel. At age 6, she joined the junior choir at her church. Her aunt noticed her talent and took her to concerts and arranged for her to sing for local functions. She was often paid 25 or 50 cents. As a teen she worked for $4-$5.












Marian Anderson
At age 10 she joined People's Chorus. At age 12 her dad was struck in the head and died of heart failure a month later. Marian moved in with her father's parents and she got close to her grandfather and he died a year later.
She attended Stanton Grammar School but could not afford high school. She raised money to get singing lessons and to attend South Philadelphia High School.

Marian won 1st prize in a singing competition sponsored by the New York Philharmonic. She later sang at Carnegie Hall in 1928.
She performed in concert and recital in major music venues and with famous orchestras.
A fun fact about her is that she was offered many opera performance jobs but she declined them all because she lacked acting experience.

Some other things of note are: she was the first black person to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC on Jan 7, 1955. She worked for years as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee giving concerts all over the world. Eleanor Roosevelt and President Roosevelt arranged for her to perform an open-air concert on Easter 1939 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for a crowd of 75,000 people and a radio audience.










Marian Anderson
Some fun facts are she worked for years as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee giving concerts all over the world. Also she performed for President Eisenhower and JFK's inauguration. She performed in the White House in 1962. Albert Einstein hosted her to perform at Princeton University in 1937. She received many many rewards and honors and prizes. Such as the Spingarm Medal in 1939 for distinguished achievement and the United Nations Peace Prize.











Marian Anderson
Additionally, she was on the 37 cent stamp. She married a man name Orpheus H Fisher and had a stepson James Fisher. She published an autobiography and released an album (Snoopycat: Marian Anderson's Cat Snoopy.) She christened nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine, USS George Washington Carver. All in all, she lead an incredibly eventful and exciting life until age 96 when she died of heart failure and was buried at the Eden Cemetry in Collingdale, Pennsylvania.











Romare Bearden
This next exhibit is about Romare Bearden. He was a famous painter. He was born Sept 2, 1911 in Charlotte, NC to Richard & Bessye Bearden. He grew up in NYC and Pennsylvania. He went to Peabody High School then to Boston University and Lincoln University, which was the nations 1st historically black college. He became the lead cartoonist and art editor for "The Medley" at New York University. He graduated from NYU in 1935.










Romare Bearden
He began his artistic career creating scenes of the American South. His early work focused on unity and cooperation within the African American community. He painted abstracts and collages. To supplement his income he worked as a case worker for the Department of Social Services and joined the US Army. His work appeared in the Samuel Kootz Gallery in NY and in the Cordier and Eksrom Gallery in NYC.









Romare Bearden
He wrote political cartoons for African American newspaper "Baltimore Afro-American." He was strongly influenced by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera and Jose' Clemente Orozco. He painted a mural in 1984 in the Gateway Center subway in Pittsburgh. It's estimated value is $15 million. He was paid $90,000 for the project titled "Pittsburgh Recollections."

Fun Facts about Romare Bearden are:
There is a street named after him in Charlotte, NC.
In 2011, forever stamps featuring 4 of his paintings were produced.
He was the founding member of a Harlem- based art group known as "The Spiral" which was formed to discuss the responsibility of the African-American artist in the civil rights movement.
