Who's ready to learn about matter?
Did you know matter is everywhere?
Well, what even is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. So, just about everything around us is matter! Here are some things I found in my house that are matter. My dog, drink coaster, keys, and faucet are all matter.
An element is a pure substance that is made from a single type of atom. For example, Argon and Tungsten are elements that are inside light bulbs.
Compounds are molecules made up of more than one element. Water is an example of a compound because it is made of Hydrogen and Oxygen. Water's formula is H2O.
A homogeneous mixture is a mixture where the substances have mixed completely. In a homogeneous mixture, you can't see the different substances within it. Coffee is a homogeneous mixture because it is a uniform solution, and you can't see the substances that are within it.
A heterogeneous mixtures have non-uniform composition. Meaning you can see the substances within the mixture that create it. Granite counter tops are an example of a heterogeneous mixture because you can see all of the substances within it.
A solid is a substance that is firm in shape and volume. Floors are solid, tables are solid, and candles are solid when not burning. You can touch or move a solid without it changing shape. I am poking the candle, but it is remaining firm and in the same shape.
A liquid is a substance that flows freely, but has a constant volume. A liquid will move when you move it, and take shape of its container. When i turn my bottle of soap upside down, it runs down the container and take the shape of the lid side. I also poured water into a zip lock bag and it took the shape of the bag.
