The Civil Rights Movement

Many years ago, in the 1950s and 60s, people wanted change. These people were African-Americans. They did not have the same freedoms or privileges as other people did in America.

They were not allowed to go to the same schools as other kids or even drink from the same water fountains in public. This was not fair and they knew it!

One day a man named, Martin Luther King Junior, decided to do something about it. MLK Jr. was all about peace and non-violence. He wanted to help people in a nice way!

So, he starting organizing rallies, events, and boycotts to bring change. Pretty soon people were coming from all over the US to see him! People loved hearing him talk and were inspired by his kind heart.

Rosa Parks was another person who saw how badly African-Americans were being treated. She had been treated badly and wanted to make sure it didn't keep happening.
