is for Angels

The angels scared the handmaid's and they would stand outside. The angels picked out the guard's guns.

is for Blessed

People were always being blessed in a holy way during the book. They recognize that people from good conditions to bad conditions should be blessed.

is for Commander

The man who is the head of the household is the commander and that is who Offred works for. Sometimes he's busy playing Scribble with her and other times he will be with his wife.

is for Doctor

Offred needs to see a doctor every month for obligatory tests. She goes to a doctor that is a specialist

is for Econowife

The Ecnowives are the women married to the husbands that are ranked lower than the commander. On page 44, it is introduced that the econowives do not the handmaids. They also wear striped dresses

is for Food Market

Offred goes to the Food market to grab food for the commander and his wife for the kitchen and the cooker, Rita.

is for Guardian

The men all had rankings, the commander being one of the highest. However the Guardian is known to be lower ranking than the angels. They are just guards that protect.

is for Humungous

The word that Offred used in her childhood. She uses the word to describe the woman's belly is like a huge fruit. Therefore the definition of humongous is huge

is for ice cube

Janine was sucking on an ice cube since they were nervous about being at the doctors (page 125).

is for Janine

In the beginning of the book, they all exchanged names when they were being separated from the center. She was one of the people that the girl's looked out for the most.

When it is night time, she mentions how the moon looks beautiful and says that it's a stone that floats in the obscured sky (page 97)

is for Kitchen

Rita is always cooking in the kitchen since she cooks most of the food. She is mostly found on the table talking to Offred

is for Luke

Luke is Offred's former husband and they have a child together. She is remembered that she misses it all when she was him and her daughter because it was actually when she wasn't lost.

is for Moon

At the night, the moon is described beautifully as a stone that is floating in the sky

is for Newspaper

It was normal for her to have Newspapers and coffee on Sunday mornings before her daughter was born.She also use to read them in the bed as well.

is for overenthusiastic

Janine was showing an excessive degree of enthusiasm which is known as being overenthusiastic because of Aunt Lydia. Janine being overenthusiastic led to sometimes force of a denial (page 131).

is for prayers

There's a machine that prints out prayers for people known as the holy roller. The five different prayers there is are for health, wealth, death, birth and sin. For the machine, you pick the one you want, punch in the number, and punch in the number of times you want the prayer repeated (page 167).
