Once upon a time long ago, there was a king of a land named France. His
name was Louis XVI and he wasn't a very good king but he held all the
power in the land. He didn't pay any attention to his people and he married a
princess who was the enemy of France. This upset many of the people who
lived in France.

The French people were already mad because most of them were
a part of the 3rd Estate, which was the poor people, and they had
no power over anything. They had no money, they couldn't marry
anyone richer, the had no say in what happened in their
government, and they had to pay really high taxes.

Life was hard for the French people, the weather turned really bad so they
couldn't grow food to sell, the king raised taxes even more, and passed laws
that were unfair to the people. The French decided that they were tired of
it and were finally going to do something about it.

During this time, there was a thing called the Enlightenment where
people started to think more and get ideas. The American Revolution
had just happened and it seemed to work for them. The poor people of
France decided to end the king having power over everything and met on
a tennis court and wrote a constitution that gave them rights and
freedom.
