This is Donte Brown. Donte is a 13-year-old boy who lives on the South Side of Chicago. He is very smart and polite. Donte was known to be a happy little boy for most of his childhood. 

Donte is a 7th-grade student at North Side Middle School. He is in the robotics and art club. He wants to be an artist when he grows up. Donte feels safer at North Side Middle because there are less fights with the police than on the South Side.

In the South Side of Chicago, there are lots of fighting and arguing. Mainly because the police officers treat people with brown skin color very mean and unfair. The police are supposed to keep everyone safe, but they are doing the opposite. Donte's dad has been in the time-out center since Donte was 8. He is there because an officer lied on him. 

 Donte's mother remarried a police officer. Donte does not like his mom's new husband because he is a police officer. Seeing his step-dad brings back memories of the day his brother went away. 

Donte had an older brother named 

Chris. Chris was killed by a police officer. Chris and Donte were walking home from the store, and the officer was being really mean to Chris. The officer shot Chris because he pulled a candy bar out of his pocket. Ever since then, Donte would get really nervous when he is around police officers.

Donte went to the doctor because he was really sad and nervous around police officers. The doctor says Donte has anxiety and depression. Anxiety is when someone feels worried or afraid all the time. Depression is when someone is very sad and doesn't feel like doing anything anymore. Donte stopped going to his clubs and started being alone all the time.

One day, Donte, his mother, and stepfather went to the grocery store to get dinner. While at the store, Donates's stepfather stepped away to get pasta and bread from one aisle. While at the same time, Donte and his mother went to get meat and vegetables from a different aisle.
