Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12th, 1997. Her parents are Ziauddin Yousafzai and Toor Pekai Zousafzai. She grew up in Magnori, Pakistan. Girls were not given equal chances, but Malala's father was determined to give her as good a life and as many opportunities as a boy.
Her father ran the girls school in her town. Malala absolutely loved school. Learning made her light up like the sun. When a group of people called the Taliban took over the town where Malala lived, they banned many things. One of those things was girls going to school. Her and her friends were no longer allowed to learn.
She worried if she would ever be able to go back to school. She left school not knowing if or when she would ever see her classmates again. Malala began to speak out publicly about how girls should be allowed to go school and learn. She started blogging about her experiences with inequality under a fake name for BBC when she was only 11 years old. She was as brave as a lion.
Malala was nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize in 2011 for her activism and bravery. She also won Pakistan's National Youth Peace Prize that same year, at only 14 years old.
Malala was scared of the Taliban after they threatened her, but she did not believe that they would hurt a child. She was more scared for her father's safety than her own. One day when Malala was on her way home from school, a man from the Taliban got onto her school bus. He attacked Malala in front of her classmates.
Malala woke up in a hospital in Birmingham England. People all over the world were praying for her recovery and showing their support. Because of the attack, Pakistan created its first Right to Education Bill.
Malala went through months of surgeries and treatment in the hospital. She joined her family in their new home in the UK when she had recovered. Malala was given a choice about what to do for the rest of her life.
She could live a quiet life in the UK with her family, or continue to fight. Malala decided she couldn't stop fighting. Not until every girl could go to school and do great things.
In 2013, Malala gave a speech to the United Nations on her 16th birthday, 9 months after the accident. In that same year, she published her first book, "I Am Malala."
Almost 2 years after her accident, Malala was given the Nobel Peace prize in 2014. She became the youngest person to ever have received the prize. She was as unstoppable as a cheetah chasing its prey.
