Welcome to Santarém, Portugal

Standing on the top of a plateau, Santarém is a belvedere over the fertile wetland region, the River Tagus valley known for farming, cattle breeding and bullfighting.
Settled on the most fertile land due to the regular flows of Tagus River, this region is a very agricultural land.
We believe the foundation of Santarém happened at the VII century b.C..
Julius César settled a military camp in Santarém in 61 b.C and after that the Romans were the rulers of this land.
Three hundred years later came the barbarians, and after that, the Muslims from north Africa.

At the XI century Christians began to conquer once again the Iberia. Portugal was born, and it was our first king - Afonso Henriques - who conquered Santarém from the muslins.(1147). So the Portuguese culture is a melting pot of several backgrounds– Carthage Greece, Celts, Romans, Moorish, Barbarians (Goths) and in Santarém we can feel and taste that.

The point of departure of our tour is Portas do Sol Garden, the citadel of the old castle which D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, captured from the Moors in a surprise attack during the night in 1147.

Near by , the beautiful tower Torre das Cabaças, also known as the Clock Tower. This 25-metre high Portuguese monument displays a bell dated from 1604. Facing the Torre das Cabaças you can admire the beautiful São João do Alporão church,

Just in the center you find the majestic Cathedral of Santarém, also known as Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church.
The bandstand of Santarém, one of the most beautiful place to walk

"Convento de São Francisco" (The São Francisco Convent)
It was founded in 1242 and is one of the best monument to visit

You can find the Bullring, in the center of the city where you can see the bullfights.
D. Luís Bridge or Santarém Bridge
Santarém is one of the most beautiful cities of Portugal.
Here you can visit lots of monuments, find lot's of shops and live many adventures by the river!

Come and visit our city because you will love it!

I live in Elazığ.
Elazığ is a city located in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. It was established at the foot of the hill where the historical Harput Castle is located. The city has a continental climate.
According to 2018 data, the population of Elazığ is 595 thousand 638. The surface area of the city is 9,383 km² and the license plate code is accepted as 23.
The most populous district of Elazığ is the city center and the district with the least population is Ağın. Elazig has 11 districts. These are: Center, Ağın, Alacakaya, Arıcak, Baskil, Karakoçan, Keban, Kovancılar, Maden, Palu, Sivrice.
The history of Elazığ dates back to very old times. The fate of the city, which was rumored to have been founded in 3000 BC, has changed as a result of the Battle of Manzikert. Elazığ has hosted many civilizations. Anatolian principalities and Mongols are the leading ones. After the Battle of Çaldıran in 1516, the Ottoman Empire took Elazığ to control.
The name of Elazığ, which has been a Turkish country for many years, was given by Atatürk in 1937 as El’azık, which means granary, and abundance. It changed to Elazığ in time.
Harput Castle (Milk Castle)
One of the important points for Elazığ is Harput Castle. This castle was built by the Urartians in the 8th century BC. In the following years, Sassanids, Byzantines, Abbasids, Çubukoğulları, Artukoğulları, Seljuks, Dulkadiroğulları and Akkoyunlu State and the Ottoman Empire established sovereignty here.
The reason why Harput Castle is called the Milk Castle is that according to the rumor, milk was placed in the mortar during the period when the castle was built. The castle, whose construction date is very long, was repaired during the Artukids period and its outer walls have been preserved to this day. If you go to Elazığ, you should visit this castle.
Historical Grand Bazaar
Located in the city center, the Grand Bazaar was built in 1928. Visitors to this city buy a lot from its bazaar. The famous Ağın chickpea, çedene coffee, tulum cheese and many souvenirs are sold in the Grand Bazaar
