What is "Text Based Instruction", you asked? Sure, I will tell you all about it!

Mom: I was looking into some of the methods you use in your classroom, tell me more about "Text Based Instruction."
Text-based instruction method is providing students with guided practice as they develop language skills for meaningful communication through whole texts. There are two levels of learning with Text Based Instruction method. The first level is mastering many types of texts and understanding. The second level is learning the content through texts.
The text-based instruction approach is a method of teaching (2nd language) or a foreign languages described by Michael Lewis in the early 1990s. The basic concept on of the Text-Based, this approach is the idea that is important part of learning a language consists of being able to understand and produce lexical phrases as chunks. Students are taught to be able to perceive patterns of grammar as well as have meaningful set uses of words at their disposal when they are taught in this way. The Text-Based approach is teaching language which involves, Teaching explicitly about the structures and grammatical features of spoken and written texts. Designing units of work which focus on developing skills in relation to whole texts.
Example Activity:
In class, we will talk about comparing and contrasting two animals. The class will be able to pick any two animals they would like. The students will then find articles, books, magazines, or any text about those animals. They will create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting. Students will then write a reflection about their findings then we will discuss the different text the students used to find their informational text.
Mother of student: Tell me more about multiplies intelligences. I have heard such great things about this method and want to know how you use this in your daily lesson plans for ELL's students.
