Liam and his brother heard an unfamiliar sound coming out of Gramps’ office – it sounded like somebody playing a guitar, but not playing it very well. They snuck into the room and saw their Gramps watching a video and trying to play the guitar along with it. After a minute he noticed and called them in. “I always liked this guitar riff” He said. “Let me play the video for you and you’ll see why.” The video was of a woman with very tall boots, backed up by a group of women with extremely high boots. They danced around as they sang a song called ‘These Boots are made for Walking” and it was, to say the least, catchy. Right after playing the video a couple of times, Gramps told the boys it was time to load up. Since Liam moved, the drive was a little farther, and they sang ‘These Boots are made for Walking’ several times, until Liam knew it by heart. Even though it was a little farther away, Liam was enjoying his new neighborhood, despite the pandemic. As compared to where he used to live, it seemed like there were a lot more kids to play with. To be sure, he did not see the kids walking back and forth to school as much since they switched to remote learning, and he wondered what some of the boys and girls looked like underneath their masks. Still, he was making friends and meeting people, and everyone warmed up to him once they got to know him.
He was sitting home after dinner one night and was a little surprised when the phone rang. He was even more surprised when his mom called out “Liam, come here, we need to talk!” Liam wondered what this might be about. His mom told him the call was from the family across the street They have a boy named Timmy who is just Liam’s age, and he got sick with COVID a few months
ago. Timmy was still not able to walk. The doctors told his family that he was not contagious, but he needed to get stronger before he could walk, and he should try every day to get stronger and hoped he could walk soon. Timmy’s mom wanted to know if Liam could bring him schoolwork every night and help him with his lessons. Liam said okay, but he was just a little nervous. Liam and his mom went over to meet Timmy and his family the next day, and he was not nervous any longer. Timmy was a great guy and he and Liam both liked to draw, do other artwork, make music, and just hang out. What’s more, Liam was catching on to reading a little faster than Timmy, and that was good too, because Liam liked reading to him.
Liam started going to Timmy’s house every night, and they became great friends. Timmy would sit on the couch by the window and watch Liam walk home after their nightly meetings. Liam would wave back at his when he got to his front door. The whole time Liam would think how nice it would be if Timmy could play outside with him. Liam was so tired of the pandemic. He thought it was especially unfair how some people, like Timmy, were incredibly careful and got the virus anyway, while others went everywhere and did anything they wanted and never even got sick. And it might even be worse that many people who got the disease did not even have one symptom, much less feel bad, while others like Timmy got extremely sick and had long term
problems. It seemed so unfair. Liam would fall asleep every night reading about robots. That was his new favorite thing. It kept his mind off fairness and was also remarkably interesting. One night at dinner, he was especially excited. He told his mom and dad that it was not at all true that all robots looked like little people, that was mostly an idea we got from the movies and television shows. In fact, most robots were special purpose machines made to take over one job of a person. Even if they could be built to do that job very quickly and never make mistakes, like sorting packages or cleaning floors, robots were really limited and would never replace people. They could sure make your life easier, though. He read about robotic tools that could drive cars on the open road, build buildings, and replace muscles in your body. Every day, robots were becoming more important to human life.
Through it all, Liam and Timmy were becoming better friends. After they worked on their lessons, they drew and colored pictures and sang songs together. Timmy liked to sing rap songs and new songs he heard on the radio,
