In dedication to our professor, Professor Olins who has guided us on this academic journey to understanding more about the deep sea.

Luna was born into a family of lanternfish that can glow using bioluminescence. Lanternfish have glowing spots (photophores) all over their bodies. However, Luna was different from the rest.
Poor Luna, her spots do not glow like her parents and the other bioluminescent lanternfish in the sea. They all can produce blue light because that’s the color that shows up the best in a place where there is very little light.
Luna always asks, “Why can’t I glow like the others?” Her dad insists that she will grow into it. Her mother assures her that it will come to her one day.
It’s been hard for Luna to communicate with other lanternfish. They use their bioluminescence to talk to one another. They make flashing patterns to show they are happy or sad. She hopes one day she can make a friend but it’s hard to stand out in the dark.
One day, Luna goes to the school yard to play hide and seek with the other lanternfish. They hide from one another using bioluminescence to camouflage themselves.
Luna can only seek because she can’t hide. When she approaches her fellow lanternfish they yell, “You can’t play Luna!”
Luna asks, “Why?”
“Because you can’t hide! Come back when you can glow!”
Luna swims away, she’s so upset. She goes near a coral to cry.
Luna has swam so far she doesn’t know where she is. She suddenly notices a very bright light heading towards her. She approaches the light.
There’s no answer until the bright lure is in her face.
Luna screams but she also hears a scream.
“Who’s there?”
"
“Attack you? You were shining your light on me!”
“I thought you were going to attack me when you screamed!
Vince is a Viperfish and he explains, “Sorry, my lure is to attract little fish for food. I have been unsuccessful though. Wait you’re a lanternfish? Why don’t you glow up?”
“Because I can’t,” Luna says sadly. “And no one seems to know why.”
“Maybe the Great Crown Jellyfish can help!” Vince exclaims.
"The Great Crown Who?"
Vince tells Luna about The Great Crown Jellyfish whose crown has magical powers. Her crown is so bright that it can be seen for nautical miles.
"I’m going to help you Luna find the The Great Crown Jellyfish so you can glow!"
Luna asks how are they going to find the Great Crown Jellyfish. Vince says a pink vampire squid, may be able to help guide them.
As they are swimming, Luna sees a beautiful bright vampire squid and points it out to Vince.
As Luna approaches the squid she yells and waves hello. The vampire squid is startled and shoots out a goo of bioluminescence from the tips of its’ arms. She tries to swim away but Luna pleads they need her help. Veronica, the vampire squid calms down.
"Legends say her crown holds infinite light to protect all of the bioluminescent species of the sea. She may give you some of her light,”says Veronica.
“That’s exactly what I need!”
Veronica shows Luna and Vince how she quickly flashes her lights on and off to confuse her prey and get away from predators.
Veronica doesn’t know where the Great Crown Jellyfish lives but knows someone who can help them. They have to find the cookiecutter shark. Luna says that name sounds familiar.
As the three of them start swimming in search of the cookiecutter shark, Luna realizes that the shark is the one who preys on her lanternfish friends.
