After WW2 the United Nations (UN) was created as a peacekeeping organization. The United Nations replaced The League of Nations which was made after the first world war as a peacekeeping organization that officially dissolved in 1946. The UN is divided up into the main bodies The Security Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, and the International Court of Justice. Most of the peacekeeping the UN does is made by The UN General Assembly and The Security Council. The UN General Assembly consists of a member from each country in the UN gathers annually to determine issues affecting world peace and security however, they can only suggest things to other countries, not any binding decisions. The Security Council is meant to peacefully resolve any conflicts and prevent any outbreak of war. The Security Council’s resolution is binding and is upheld by the UN peacekeepers.

Who was responsible for Peacekeeping?

The United Nations(UN) were the ones responsible for keeping the peace after the Second World War. The Security Council were the specific branch of the UN that had the power and authority to make binding decisions to prevent international conflicts and outbreaks of war. There are five permanent seats on the council consisted of The U.S, Great Britain, France, Russia, and China. There are also ten temporary seats that switch between the different countries in the UN biennial. The General Assembly also had a role in peacekeeping but couldn't make any binding decisions.
