Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BCE. He was born into the Kshatriya cast in Nepal. He was born into royalty to king Suddhodana and his wife Queen Maya.

While Queen Maya was asleep, she dreamt a white elephant descended into her womb through the right side. 

She became pregnant, and throughout her pregnancy, she could see him in the womb. 10 months later Queen Maya went into labour. 

Siddhartha was born with the assistance of tree branches from the side. After his birth, Siddhartha took seven steps stating, "This is my last birth." 

After his birth, the king ordered all wise men to come and predict the future of his son. 

An old sage named Asita predicted the baby would become a great leader or a redeemer. With this news the baby was named Siddhartha

As Siddhartha was to become king one day, the king did his best to provide his son with all of his heart's desires in an effort to block out the bad of the world. 

Siddhartha and a cousin by the name of Yasodhara wed at  young age and together had a child by the name of Rahula

With age, Siddhartha became curious of the outside world, and at age 29, he visited the city.

During his visit Siddhartha encountered an old man, a sick man, a dead man, and an ascetic monk. 

Upon seeing these sights he began to reflect on: suffering, death, the meaning  of life, the ultimate fate of man and upon these reflections, Siddhartha decided he needed to find a spiritual solution

Feeling inspired by the monk, Siddhartha decided to follow in his footsteps. So, leaving his wife and child behind, he began on his journey in search of the ultimate truth of life
