The Louisiana Territory was originally owned by France under Napoleons leadership.

France controlled more of the present-day United States than any other European power.

 Spain signed a secret treaty with France to return the Louisiana Territory to France in 1801.

Americans moving westward towards the Ohio and Tennessee river which the settlers were very dependent on these rivers.

Many problems Including Frances Failure to put down a slave revolution in Haiti, and the impending war with great Britain, put Napoleon in a position to offer Louisiana to the United States.

In December 1803 France transferred the authority over the region to the United states.

The United States doubled in size after the Louisiana Purchase. The United States gained all of; Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. The Louisiana also gave the United States most of; Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Minnesota.

This purchase was incredibly important because the US was aiming to gain New Orleans because of the major trade routes.

9 years after the purchase of the territory, the first state from the territory, Louisiana, was added to the union.

Manifest Destiny existed because of all the land in the west being offered. Manifest Destiny positively affected people because it gave them a second chance, and more chances to make money.  Without Manifest Destiny the Louisiana Purchase would never of happened, and America would slowly die.

In the end the Louisiana purchase doubled the size of the US and strengthened the country as a whole.
