This is Carrie and she ate a cupcake but she wants to know where does the cupcake go, So she asked her science teacher, Mrs. Gates, to show her where it goes.

Mrs.Gates made a diagram to show how the digestive system works and then she will go in detail with what order the cupcake will take in the digestive system.

The first step is the salivary gland releases saliva and digestive enzymes in your mouth. Then once you eat the cupcake it will go in the mouth and that is where mechanical breakdown occurs and breaks the cupcake down into smaller pieces.

Next the cupcake will go down the esophagus.

The cupcake then goes into the stomach. In the stomach chief cells secrete pepsin and parietal cells secrete gastric acid. Also in the stomach the acids are involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates.

Next the cupcake will go in the small intestine. In the small intestine nutrients and water are absorbed. Also this is where chemical breakdown occurs. The pancreas produces enzymes to help break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The gall bladder stores the bile that breaks down fat.

Then it will go through the large intestine. The large intestine absorbs water from the material that has not been digested as food, and gets rid of any waste left over.
