Jeremiah Mittens had just read the news that
President Andrew Jackson had ratified the
13th Amendment which meant all slaves
were free.

Mr. Mittens was happy to know that Lincoln's
Plan to unify the Union was actually
happening.

Jeremiah Mittens was a recently freed slave
who became a sharecropper to make a profit.
However, the white land owner who provided
the land and materials did not give Jeremiah
his profits.

Since sharecropping was tough to earn a
profit, Jeremiah became a tenant farmer.
Now Mr. Mittens could keep his profits.

Other freed slaves say that sharecropping
and tenant farming are Black Codes that
restrict African Americans rights.
J.M.

Jeremiah Mittens didn't find it so bad,
especially since he received food and clothing
from Freedman's Bureau.

After the Civil Rights Act of 1866, Black
Codes were no longer an issue.

Eventually the 14th Amendment was ratified
giving every citizen equal rights.

The Reconstruction Act of 1867 allowed
martial law in the South, allowing Jeremiah
and other African Americans rights.

The Radical Republican's plan to help
former slaves is working!
J.M.

Jeremiah Mittens noticed President Johnson was
having problems with his cabinet members. The
Tenure of Office Act said that the president
couldn't fire someone without approval from the
Senate. The president was then impeached by the
House of Representatives.
